PHOTO STORY | Zürichsee

The day after I arrived in Switzerland in 2009, I travelled from my anunt’s place at Wiedlisbach to Zürich. I would stay at friends’ place there, for a very early start to Copenhagen the next day. The journey started off in the wrong direction, but there was method to the madness. The connection to Zürich was much more convenient from Solothurn, rather than via Niederbipp. From Solothurn one of the ICN tilting trains whisked me along the new high-speed line at speds up to 200km/h.

It was a spur-of-the-moment decision to make the most of a beautiful summer’s afternoon and go for a “Rundfahrt” on the lake. We boarded a train at Stadelhofen station, which took us through the suburbs along the right bank of Lake Zürich to Stäfa. We had timed our arrival to catch the lake steamer “Stadt Zürich”.

After a short stroll down to the quay, the graceful ship arrived on schedule. It was her centenary celebration that year and was decked out with flags and a bouquet of flowers on her prow. The trip first took us to Rapperswil, followed by a criss-cross journey down to Zürich Bürkliplatz.
