Paper modelling has a very long history, and was widespread right into the the years after World War II. Many models were published in magazines, to simply be cut out, folded and glued together. Their stylisation and vintage appeal match perfectly with model trains of the era.

The advent of plastic model kits in the early sixties caused the decline of paper models; however, recent years have seen a resurgance in their popularity, thanks largely to the internet.  A wide variety of kits can simply be downloaded, many of them free of charge, and printed at home. It is possible to re-size them to suit any particular scale, and if a part is lost or damaged, it can simply be printed again. I am currently designing  a number of paper model kits to suit H0 scale, the first of which is available as a free download.

In 2009, dolfmeister received permission from Verkehrshaus der Schweiz, the Swiss Transport Museum at Lucerne, to publish a digital copy of their now out of print 'Dampfschiff Rigi' model kit. It is now available here for your enjoyment. The model in scale 1:72 measures about 580mm long when finished.

At over 160 years of age, Dampfschiff Rigi is considered to be the oldest side-wheel paddle steamer in existence worldwide, as well as being the oldest example of motorised  transport in Switzerland.

The original was built at Ditchborn & Mare shipyard, London, in 1847.  She plied the waters of  Lake Lucerne for 105 years until she was retired in 1952. Since 1959, Rigi has been on display at the Verkehrshaus and has recently been rebuilt to how she might have appeared in around 1870. This measure became necessary, after the ship was severely damaged in the floods of 2005. The restoration is yet incomplete, mainly due to a lack of funding for the project. Your donation to the Verkehrshaus would be very much appreciated.
